As well as lying in its own beautiful valley, Patterdale is an excellent base for walking, nestling as it does between two mountain ranges. To the west the Helvellyn range – with Helvellyn, Fairfield, and St. Sunday Crag; to the east is High Street, Thornthwaite Crag and Place Fell.

There's also some excellent low-level walking along Ullswater (with the chance of a lazy return by steamer in the Summer) or south to Hartsop and Brothers Water.
