Buttermere village has two pubs, a Youth Hostel and no shop, and is a superb base for walking. To the south west is the High Stile ridge (which has its own photo page) with several routes over to Ennerdale, while the other side of the lake is Robinson. Steep climbs everywhere!

The lake itself is lovely, as is neighbouring Crummock Water (both part of the same valley).
